God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that He is Lord of Heaven and Earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; neither is worshiped with men's hands as though he needed anything, seeing He giveth to all life, and breath, and all things. -Acts 17:24-25What a humbling thought! God does not need me, cannot be contained by anything I can see or touch, and has made all things. On the other hand, I need Him, cannot be sustained without Him, and cannot make anything without His blessing. Thanks be to God for all the blessings He has bestowed upon us!

Humbling Thought of the Day
As I work on keeping up with my daily Bible reading in 2011, today's reading included Acts 17.

Just taught John 11:35 last Sunday. Its known as the shortest verse, but when you consider what it is really saying, it may be the most powerful. He wasn't weeping b/c Lazarus was dead (He knew he was about to raise him). He was weeping b/c of the tears of Mary and those with him (Jn 11:33). It seems to be a genuine and sincere outpouring of sympathetic emotion. Even though he had allowed his friends to be pained, even though the knew that suffering was for a greater purpose (11:4), and even though he knew he was about to turn their sorrow into joy, he was still moved by their tears to tears of his own.
ReplyDeleteThe Point? That puts even more emphasis on Acts 17:25. Not only does God not need us in any way, and not only does He give us everything, He does NOT give like a master tossing crumbs to the slaves. He truly, genuinely cares for and loves us and feels our deepest pain, even if that pain may be serving a much larger and important purpose than we can understand in the moment. He gives us "all things" NOT because He HAS to, but because He CHOOSES to and WANTS to. And that makes a world of difference!
